Michigan Veteran Homeownership Resources

A practical directory of official federal and Michigan resources for veterans, service members and qualifying surviving spouses.

Start with the right agency

Mortgage questions, VA benefit questions and Michigan veteran benefits are handled by different organizations. This directory points veterans and surviving spouses to the official source for each need.

VA home-loan eligibility and the Certificate of Eligibility

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs sets the guaranty program rules. A private lender still evaluates income, credit, assets, occupancy and the property. Start with the VA home-loan portal. Veterans who need to request a Certificate of Eligibility can use the VA’s Form 26-1880 page and online process.

A COE documents available entitlement; it is not a loan approval. Mike can often help retrieve it while building a preapproval.

Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency

The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency coordinates state resources and operates the Michigan Veteran Resource Service Center. Veterans can call 1-800-MICH-VET (1-800-642-4838) or use MVAA’s online resources.

Michigan property-tax information for veterans

Michigan Treasury explains property-tax exemptions, credits and relief that may apply to veterans or active-duty service members. Eligibility is separate from VA loan eligibility.

Certain disabled veterans or qualifying unremarried surviving spouses may be eligible for a property-tax exemption. Applicants must follow the current state and local filing process and provide the required documentation. Review the Treasury overview and the State Tax Commission exemption materials, then contact the assessor for the city or township where the home is located.

Budget carefullyDo not remove property taxes from a mortgage estimate until current eligibility, filing and lender treatment have been confirmed.

Help for a Michigan purchase

Official agencies answer benefit and tax questions. Mike’s role is to translate the verified facts into the mortgage plan: entitlement, loan structure, payment, cash to close, offer timing and lender comparison.

Use the Michigan VA cash-to-close worksheet, review a side-by-side Mortgage Coach analysis, or start with the VA eligibility checklist.
